Educating Scotland’s young people

In 2011 we introduced Moving Stories, a short film education competition. The theme of the competition was ’90 years of the Poppy – then and now – 1921-2011.’

There were two categories for the competition – Primary and Secondary and entries were accepted in the form of completed films films, scripts or storyboards.  We received 47 entries in total and this gave us a shortlist of 4 films (2 in each category). The standard of entries was very impressive and each of the four shortlisted schools spent a day with a professional filmmaking team to have their films remade from their original scripts, storyboards or films, before opening to a public vote.

Over 2000 votes were cast through an online system which meant that we could drive traffic to our education website. The winner was St Brigid’s Primary School in Glasgow, whose five-minute film, called ‘James Stokes – A Gorbals Hero’, told the story of the eponymous Scots Second World War Victoria Cross winner.

Class members who made the film attended our volunteer gathering and were presented with a plaque with our congratulations.
