Sowing the Poppy seed

Poppyscotland's Education Project

The Project

Sowing the Poppy seed

We've created a comprehensive learning experience that highlights the importance of remembrance, veterans and Poppyscotland.

Project Aims - Supporting Curriculum for Excellence:

Our close partnership with Learning and Teaching Scotland has allowed us to build all teaching material from the ground up, incorporating at their core the four main capacities of Curriculum for Excellence: successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors.

Each lesson, activity and exercise has been developed to stimulate a wealth of skills and abilities. The materials are based around the central key question 'Why is it important to remember?' with four other big questions to stimulate learning and teaching:

  • Why do conflicts arise, how do they develop and how are they resolved?
  • How do conflicts affect communities?
  • What is the significance of the poppy?
  • How can we support Poppyscotland?

Each of these 'big questions' addresses key proficiency and learning requirements from literacy to communication, cultural awareness to team building and problem solving. By posing such large questions and supporting them with an array of activities, pupils are encouraged to think independently and form their own personal views.

A multimedia experience

With the help of Learning and Teaching Scotland, Lady Haig's Poppy Factory, The Royal British Legion Scotland and Scottish Screen Archive, The National Library of Scotland we were able to create a learning experience rich in interactivity and one that crosses media boundaries. Video, audio and print combine to bring to life the personal stories of veterans and importance of remembrance in a way that pupils can relate and understand, while the engaging activities develop their crucial skills naturally.

Supported learning

The entire program is fully supported with a wealth of online material and teacher downloads. Our easy to use file management system allows you access to all the material you'll need.
