Poppyscotland helped 79-year-old Royal Navy veteran Alan Dixon by supplying him with an electrically-powered vehicle. Alan suffers from severe arthritis in his knees and is also fighting prostate cancer, which has made getting around much more difficult.
Poppyscotland was delighted to be able to help Alan by giving him an electrically-powered vehicle .
However, Alan’s story did not end there. While chatting to Poppyscotland’s volunteer driver, Dave Brown, on receipt of his scooter, he began to reminisce about his days as a minesweeper for the Royal Navy and mentioned that he was going to try and find out if they had an old comrades association so he could get in touch with some of his old mates.
Alan was given a wonderful surprise to find out that such an association does exist and that David is the secretary. Therefore, through the support of Poppyscotland, Alan is now able to be more self-sufficient and run some errands for himself, and he has also been able to talk about old times with a few friends that he had lost touch with.
Alan said: “I think that Poppyscotland does a wonderful job in helping ex-Service personnel like me. Through meeting David I have got in touch with a couple of my old Service mates.”
