Case Study: The Gregsons

Mr and Mrs Gregson from Fife were among the first people from Scotland to benefit from a Poppy Break with a two-week stay at Byng House in Southport.

Both in their eighties, the couple had become limited in their ability to get out and about due to Mrs Gregson’s painful arthritis in her knee and her husband’s decision to give up driving at the age of 86. They found out about Poppy Breaks from a family friend and, because Mr Gregson had served with the Royal Artillery in the 1940s, the couple were eligible to apply to Poppyscotland for assistance with the cost of their break.

They said: “We thoroughly enjoyed our Poppy Break - it was like living in a hotel. The staff were extremely kind and helpful, and we were offered a choice of menu at each meal. There was a wonderful programme of outings, using the Centre’s own mini coach for transport and the evening entertainment was the icing on the cake. It was a perfect holiday for us and we would recommend it to anyone.”
