Scottish Poppy Appeal

Facts & Statistics

The Scottish Poppy Appeal is Poppyscotland’s largest fundraising event.

The 2010 Scottish Poppy Appeal raised a record £2,351,922 – a 5% increase on the previous year.

The past five years have seen a 50% increase in Scottish Poppy Appeal totals.

Poppyscotland (The Earl Haig Fund Scotland) was founded in 1921 by Field Marshal Earl Haig, Commander-in-Chief of the British Army in France, 1915-1919.

The Scottish poppy has no leaf. Apart from being botanically incorrect it would cost £15,000 to make leaves for all poppies - money we feel is better spent on providing support to veterans.

Lady Haig’s Poppy Factory produces five million poppies each year. There are plastic-stemmed and stick-on varieties to choose from.

The Factory supports employment for veterans with disabilities. There are currently 40 veterans employed, aged between 30 and 72. Between them they have seen active service in every campaign from Korea to the first Gulf War.

Over 10,000 volunteers take to the streets every November to organise or help with collections.

Over 60,000 collection cans are used during each Appeal.

Poppyscotland is the only charity officially recognised by the Scottish Parliament and every year the charity is invited to launch the Scottish Poppy Appeal at Holyrood.
