Nominate your Forces Hero

1st March 2018 Fraser Bedwell

Poppyscotland is delighted to be sponsoring the Forces Hero category in the 2018 Daily Record and Utilia Our Heroes awards.

The prestigious annual awards recognise and honour ordinary people for extraordinary achievements. Now in its 15th year, it brings together all that is great about the people of Scotland. The Forces Hero category specifically recognises the immense contribution and bravery of those who have served, and are still serving, in our Armed Forces.

Poppyscotland is calling on supporters to nominate anyone who has served, or is still serving, who they think is deserving of the 2018 Forces Hero award. Their heroism could be an act of bravery on the front line or doing something inspirational to help others after their time in uniform has come to and end, like 2017 winner Deborah Burns.

Deborah served as a military clerk in the Army for 10 years, but after falling pregnant with daughter Amy-Leigh, now nine, struggled to adapt to normal life and eventually found herself homeless, bankrupt and suffering from post-natal depression.

Determined to turn her life around, brave Deborah became a veterans’ support worker with Scottish Association for Mental Health and Veterans First Point, and now helps other former service personnel and their families in all aspects of life.

Poppyscotland Chief Executive Mark Bibbey said: “We are delighted to sponsor the 2018 Daily Record and Utilia Forces Hero award. Members of the Armed Forces regularly, willingly and selflessly do amazing things for others and it is fitting that we have this opportunity to shine a light on their contribution, both during and after service.

“Rarely do these people shout about their achievements so that is why we’re encouraging our supporters to help us identify as many inspirational individuals as possible before nominations close on 18th March.”
