|My father, Alastair John McIsaac, was in the 51st Highland Division and was captured at the Battle of St Valery 80 years ago today. He was marched on foot to Poland where he ended up as a POW in Stalag in Marienberg. He never talked about his time as a POW in the camp at home with my brother and myself, and it never came up in conversation with my mother either. I do know that on his release he went to live with his sister and husband in Darlington. He would go out first thing in the morning and not return till late evening, just walking, freedom I suppose. He eventually returned to his mother in Giffnock, Glasgow. Like many, I suppose, he had witnessed so much horror and tried to blank it out of his mind. I only found out all about his POW camp a few years ago, he died in 2002. He left no information at all. I think he must have destroyed it after his release and there certainly never was any medal.
We remember you fondly, today and always, Dad. You are forever in our hearts.
