My Dad, Charles Irvine, and Uncle, Edward Irvine, joined the Bucksburn Company of the 5th Battalion (Territorial Army) in around 1938. At the outbreak of war they were called up and were part of the 51st Highland Division who were captured at St Valery. They spent the rest of the war as POW’s and in February 1924 were sent to Stalag XXB in Poland.
My Dad was a kind, loving man and never spoke much about his experiences other than that he would never do it again. He died in 2003 in a care home with dementia – another type of prison camp for him!
