With the country still in lockdown and the official events to mark the 75th Anniversary of VE Day postponed, the country is being asked to come together and host “virtual” VE Day parties at home instead.
On or around VE Day (Friday 8th May, 2020), we’re asking households to combine the spirit of 1945 with modern video chat technology. It is hoped “virtual” parties will ensure the 75th anniversary of the end of the war in Europe is marked in homes up and down the country, despite the current restrictions.
VE Day parties are an opportunity to bring together family and friends via popular video chat platforms such as FaceTime, Zoom and Houseparty. They are an ideal way to remain connected with loved ones and join in a collective tribute to the generation who gave so much.
We’ve produced a host of resources to learn more about the significance of VE Day, and our popular digital learning materials have already proven to be a hit with home-schooling parents. The VE Day party resources also include classic wartime recipes such as potato shortbread, together with more modern sweet treats including poppy cupcakes. Downloadable bunting is also available, as are suggested playlists of wartime classics such as We’ll Meet Again and Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.
