A stunning poppy-shaped art installation has begun blooming at Glasgow’s Buchanan Galleries shopping centre as part of the 2017 Scottish Poppy Appeal. Designed by renowned artist Mark Humphrey, the artwork was unveiled by Armed Forces veterans who will be part of the team of volunteers manning the giant poppy between now and Remembrance Sunday.

The huge metal artwork comprises of four curved poppy petals, each containing 1,000 small holes.  Buchanan Galleries customers are being invited to take two poppies from the veterans, planting one within the sculpture and wearing the other on their lapel in the traditional way. For this they are being encouraged to make a suggested donation of £2.

It is hoped that over the course of the Poppy Appeal period poppies will be planted within every one of the 4,000 holes, creating both a stunning visual display and, importantly, raising an additional £8,000 for the 2017 Scottish Poppy Appeal. It is also hoped that this will highlight the impact that small individual efforts of many people can combine to create something incredibly powerful.

Kathy Murdoch, centre manager at Buchanan Galleries, said: “It is a great honour to have been chosen to host this art installation from Poppyscotland. Marks design is a very moving example of exquisite craftsmanship and the sculpture is warmly welcomed to Buchanan Galleries.

“We hope our customers will dig deep to help raise vital funds, which provide life-changing support to our Armed Forces community.”

Poppyscotland Head of Fundraising Gordon Michie added: “We are so proud to bring Mark Humphrey’s stunning artwork to such a prestigious and popular venue. Our Armed Forces community relies on Poppyscotland to provide a vast range of life-changing support services and we can only do this through the support of members of the public. The installation perfectly illustrates how many small things really can make a big difference.

“In addition to being manned by our incredible volunteers, we are delighted that so many of the retailers within Buchanan Galleries are encouraging their staff to join us in manning the giant poppy over the course of the next fortnight.”

The Scottish Poppy Appeal is Scotland’s largest annual street collection and last year raised £2.9 million. More than five million poppies and 60,000 collecting tins have been distributed around Scotland. Poppyscotland relies on a network of 450 volunteer area organisers and around 10,000 volunteer collectors who ensure that every corner of the country has their poppies in time for the Appeal.
